Tasting Notes

Songlines Estates Basket Pressed McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017

Wonderful Depth of colour with an intense purple centre. Complex aromas with distinct fresh berries, floral notes that run seamlessly through the nose with intensity derived from cherries, blackberries with spice and cedary oak. The palate is youthfully opulent and potent, interwoven flavours melt away with fresh red fruits, cranberry and cherry. Complexity comes from the lashings of aniseed, liquorice, spices and dark chocolate. The wine has an understated structure that is quite refined with grainy oak tannins that build and give length staying with you long after the wine has gone.

Songlines Estates McLaren Vale Chardonnay 2016

Pale Straw in colour. Lovely aromas with alluring multi-dimensional layers, there are notes of lemon, lime and fig with touches of nuts and frangipani flowers. Pears, lime, lemon with beautifully balanced structured acid. There is a herbal edge with great length and loads of complexity which continue to develop with every glass.

Songlines Estates Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir 2017

Full bright crimson red with dark purple hues. Lush dark and light berry fruits combine with floral edge that creates a fresh and vibrant introduction. Vibrant cherries are the centre piece in this wines infancy a touch of pepper and licorice appear when allowed to breathe which although appear to be opposite ends of the taste spectrum work harmoniously together whilst some crisp acid provides a refreshing Moorish finish. The wine has fine-grained silky smooth tannins, which continue to roll on and on and seem lavish on the palate demanding another taste.

Technical Notes

Songlines Estates Basket Pressed McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017

“Songlines” are invisible pathways which criss cross the land all over Australia and stretch across continents and ages. The exceptional wine is named Songlines as it perfectly encapsulates the importance of the land, people and knowledge learned over time and across continents.

Sourced from select premium vineyards with ages varying from between 40 – 110 years old. Each batch is treated differently to build complexity and all winemaking decisions were made at the time of harvest not predetermined to a recipe. Fermentation may be hot around 30 degrees or cool around 24 degrees, it may be in open top fermenters with piage by hand or with heading boards. Ferment may be warmed as it begins to cool or maceration on skins extended for up to 3 weeks. Wild ferments are encouraged although for parcels with higher alcohols cultured yeast is used to ensure complete fermentation. 25% of the total is fermented in barrel, giving more intense but softer rounder extraction of oak flavours and tannins. Before being put together the individual batches are matured for a minimum of 12 months in mainly new French barrels.

A wine which has been designed to stand the test of time and if cellared well will last for around 10 or so years. If drunk whilst young allow the wine to breath prior to consuming.

Songlines Estates McLaren Vale Chardonnay 2016

Hand harvested from vineyards located in the Mediterranean grape growing region of McLaren Vale. The wine was crushed under controlled temperatures prior to being gently bag pressed to tank before being racked. Selected parcels then were matured in the finest of Burgundian oak prior to being bottled then aged in bottle for 6 months prior to release.

Songlines Estates Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir 2017

We sourced fruit from a single vineyard which we felt was 2017’s standout Pinot Noir crop then whole bunch fermentation took place in a small open top fermenter. After fermentation and maceration the wine was racked into 1-3 year old French barriques. After natural malolactic fermentation, the wines were matured for a period of 6-9 months before final barrel selection, blending and bottling.
