The Colour and the Shape is the Foo Fighters' second album. It was released in 1997 through Roswell/Capitol Records.

This album was the debut of the Foo Fighters as a band, as Dave Grohl had recorded all of the first Foo Fighters album by himself with the exception of one guitar part. After a grueling recording session at Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville, Washington, Grohl took guitarist Pat Smear and bassist Nate Mendel to Grandmaster Studios in Los Angeles, California, and rerecorded the album with Grohl himself on drums. Following this session, drummer William Goldsmith officially quit the band. Considered one of the band's finest albums, with such popular songs as "My Hero", "Everlong", and "Monkey Wrench", it reached No. 3 UK and No. 10 US. As of June 2005, The Colour And The Shape remains Foo Fighters' biggest U.S. seller, with 1.9 million units sold.
