Tasting Notes

Light in colour but real presence. On the nose herbs and woodsmoke give way to subtle cherry and hints of anise. It has a velvety texture, tannic but flush with forest fruit.

Technical Notes

The Indigo Vineyard is located 12km’s from Beechworth in the foothills of the Victorian Alps. The cool, dry climate and the soils which vary from granite to clay loams lend themselves to high quality Pinot Noir. The vineyard site is at an elevation of 350 metres. The wine is a blend of 3 clones, 114,115 &amp MV6.

Good winter rains provided great soil moisture for the growing season. The Indigo sheep were in the vineyard over winter keeping the grass down whilst adding fertiliser to our soils. Budburst began in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in mid-September and was even across all varieties. In early November there were four frosts but damage was averted with the use of frost sprinklers. After a dry spring, December delivered above average rainfall. January heated up accelerating ripening but was settled and benign with warm dry temperatures throughout the harvest period, except for a solitary storm in late February. We picked our Pinot Noir on the 12th and 13th of February. Harvest continued into March with the later varieties coming off with Cabernet and Petit Verdot finishing a relatively uncomplicated harvest on March 21. Fruit quality, yield and ripeness was excellent, surpassing expectations in some varieties, and especially heartening after a relatively challenging growing season.

Fruit was hand-picked and about 25% whole bunches were used in the ferment. Maturation was in French oak with 30% in new oak and the balance in barrels of varying age from a variety of coopers. Minimal intervention is required to maximise pinot-characters and to allow the soils and the character of the region to be displayed.
