Tasting Notes

Monolith Vintners Old Vine Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2014

Deep dark centre with a ruby red hue. On the palate it shows excellent fruit purity and texture with ripe blackberry, red plum and some cherry fruits coming to the fore. Again an expressive mid-palate showing hints of vanilla, licorice and mocha which mesh seamlessly with the judicious French oak characters as the wine flows to a finish that shows great persistence, ripe, super-fine tannins and a seam of balanced, bright acidity. This is a style of wine that requires decanting and time to breathe to soften prior to consuming although will be cellared prior to release the wine has the fruit, alcohol and tannin structure to ensure cellaring for many more years where it will continue to evolve

Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Deep ruby crimson colour. A massive intense and enticing nose, the initial hit of exotic fruit once allowed to breathe will mellow. Black berry and dark cherry are the dominant character whilst varietal character of cassis is also very evident. The French oak influence is still evident despite its age and highlights the quality of the new large format oak used. Concentrated, tremendous texture and depth are hallmarks of this wine. The great richness which comes from black fruits flavours is immense, brooding and dense. The age of the wine is evident through notes of earth and leather saddle although the fruit is just so potent that they are just a side show. This style of wine requires decanting and time to breathe to soften prior to consuming although will be cellared prior to release the wine has the fruit, alcohol and tannin structure to ensure cellaring for many more years where it will continue to evolve.

Monolith Vintners Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

The 2017 vintage proved to be another good Barossa vintage following on from the outstanding 2016 vintage which although had challenges provided excellent varietal flavours. The dry grown, old vines that yielded this fruit managed to produce wonderful fruit despite small volumes. We hand picked the fruit from a single block with vines aged up to 90 years. The fruit was transported to the winery where it was gently de-stemmed into concrete open top fermenters. It was then carefully nurtured for 7 days on skins with pump overs occurring twice daily, varying in duration and intensity. When primary fermentation was almost complete, the wine was drained from the skins and the must is gently basket pressed for 8 hours. The wine remains in a stainless steel tank until primary fermentation is completed. It is then run directly into new and old American and French hogsheads where it spent the next 24 months. Once the oak and the wine had perfectly become one the wine is blended and bottled without the use of filtration or fining. 670 six packs were produced in total.

Technical Notes

Monolith Vintners Old Vine Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2014

Really good winter and early spring rains filled the soils and set the vines up well for the season. Late spring and summer were hot and dry although some cool overnight temperatures did caused some issues in some blocks. Harvest was earlier than usual but a rain event and cool weather in February caused the vintage rush to slow to a nice pace. Despite crop levels being down overall we were exceptionally happy with the quality of fruit produced due to weather patterns the fruit was small although really full of flavour and vibrancy. The fruit was transported to the winery where it was gently de-stemmed into concrete open top fermenters. A wonderfully example of big and bold Barossa GSM which will stand the test of time, ensure it is allowed to breathe prior to consuming.

Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

The 2012 vintage will go down as one of the finest vintages in the history of Australian winemaking. The vintage indicated early the supreme quality that would be produced by the dry grown, old vines that yielded the fruit we isolated for this special once off trial. Our commitment to making French influenced Iconic Australian wine lead us to the Coonawarra region and we felt our style would best benefit from fruit from this region. We hand-picked the fruit and it was transported to the winery where it was gently de-stemmed into concrete open top fermenters. It was then carefully nurtured for 7 days on skins with pump overs occurring twice daily, varying in duration and intensity. When primary fermentation was almost complete, the wine was drained from the skins and the must is gently basket pressed for 8 hours. It is then run directly into new French Puncheon barrels (500 litres) where it spent the next 60 months of its life and we believe is a world first for barrel aging such a wine. The wine was then blended, and only the best barrels selected to be bottled without the use of filtration or fining. Aged in bottle before just 500 six packs were released.

A wonderfully example of traditional French style Cabernet Sauvignon with our individual Australian twist which will stand the test of time, ensure it is allowed to breathe for at least 1-2 hours prior to consuming.

Monolith Vintners Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

A massive all encompassing nose when allowed to breathe, it’s a little closed initially but once allowed to breathe you will find forest fruits, blackberries, smoked meat and pepper which are supported by a dark core of espresso bean, black currants and dried raisons. The palate shows superb concentration offering up tremendous texture and combines great fruit richness with subtle notes of leather, blackcurrant and alcohol. This style of wine requires decanting and time to breathe to soften prior to consuming although has been cellared prior to release the wine has the fruit, alcohol and tannin structure to ensure cellaring for many more years where it will continue to evolve.
