The Story

Located in the heart of Australias iconic Barossa wine region, St Hallett has been producing great wines since it was established in 1944. All fruit used in the St Hallett wine is grown in the Barossa. The Barossas rich and diverse range of vines and soils that allows them to craft and exciting range of full flavoured and unique textured wines which are savoured around the world and recognised as benchmarks of the region.

St Hallett is dedicated to translating the tapestry of soils and meso-climates of the Barossa wine region in each of its wines. In 2004, it was named Winery of the Year by international publication Wine & Spirits.

The Wine

As St Hallett reserve Shiraz, Blackwell is big and bold. It exudes all the power and brooding density that the Barossa has to offer in Shiraz.

The fruit is picked at full ripeness to gain optimum power and concentration of fruit flavour and a dense, inky colour. Each parcel of Shiraz is individually matched to one of a selection of American oak barrels in which the wine spends two years maturing and gaining considerable texture and power prior to release.

St Hallett's Blackwell is big Shiraz for the lovers of ripe concentrated fruit and a generous measure of vanilla oak. A classic regional style, enjoy this beauty with robust beef or game dishes and hard cheeses.

***Densely packed black fruits with a touch of fresh sage and mocha; the density is palpable on the palate, with the toasty oak weaving seamlessly in amongst the fruit; big, lavish and friendly and warm, if this wine could cuddle you, it probably would.***- James Halliday, 2012.

Named in honour of long-serving chief winemaker Stuart Blackwell, this is less than half the price of the top St Hallett shiraz, Old Block, but lacks little in comparison. Dense, dark red-purple in colour, it has slightly reductive, sweet, almost jammy fruit on the bouquet, with some savoury earthiness. It's rich and deep on the palate with plenty of fleshiness and density, but also elegance and grace, with no excesses of oak, alcohol or ripeness. Good concentration and a long, long aftertaste. Good Wine Guide, 2013

Tasting Note: Notes of dark chocolate, wild blackberry and hints of clove and aniseed. Dark cherry and licorice on the palate adds to the deep fruit characters rolling nicely from fruit into spice and cracked pepper. Long finish.
