What is Halloween and why do we celebrate it?
Halloween is a holiday, more commonly celebrated in the United States of America on the 31st October every year. This year in 2023, Halloween will fall on a Monday, and will, as always, be a great time for kids to go trick-or-treating and get all those delicious lollies. Halloween as a tradition is thought to have originated from an ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, where individuals would get together to light bonfires and dress-up to ward off ghosts and evil spirits.
What religions are against Halloween?
Many Muslims, Christians and Jews abstain from celebrating Halloween, as it is rooted in paganism and occasionally, is linked with the devil. Of course its actual roots stem from superstitious ceremonies held by Celts many years ago, but it still occasionally gets lambasted as an act of sin by many. Halloween today in Australia, as in the US, is less a religious or superstitious activity and more an opportunity to dress up and feast on candy!
Why is October 31st Halloween?
The Celts believed that the boundary between the living and the dead opened up on the eve of the new year, releasing ghosts, demons and spirits back into the realm of the earth. According to their calendars, the new year’s eve falls on October 31st - which is when they would dress up in costumes and light fires together to ward off any evil spirits. This day was called Samhain, and is widely celebrated in many western cultures today as Halloween.
