About the AuthorD. DUANE CUMMINS has been a visiting scholar in American history at Johns Hopkins University since 2002. He is a past president of Bethany College and the Division of Higher Education as well as past moderator of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and a former Darbeth-Whitten professor of American history at Oklahoma City University. He also served as interim president of Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University and of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society.
