A veteran recording artist since 1933 with his own brand of rough 'n' ready hillbilly blues, Bill Carlisle reinvented himself in the 1950s as "Jumpin' Bill Carlisle" and signed to progressive Mercury Records who encouraged the new sound of hot country boogie being developed by Carlisle with his guitarist Chet Atkins. Scoring astonishing success with their debut recording, "Too Old to Cut the Mustard" (#6, 1952) - an old country saying remembered from his father - this was followed swiftly by the much-covered "No Help Wanted" (#1, 1953), "Knothole" (#3, 1953), "Is Zat You, Myrtle?" (#2, 1953), "Tain't Nice (To Talk Like That)" (#5, 1954), "Shake-A-Leg" (#15, 1954) and "Honey Love" (#12, 1954). This fun package is the best of Bill's country boogies and proto-rockabillies suffused with his homemade hilarious hillbilly humour and decidedly non-PC rural risibility.
