With their dense canopy and petite stature, Katsura or Caramel trees (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) provide beauty and shade to small yards.

Grown for its beautiful shape and its attractive round-oval leaves 10 cm (4") long resemble those of a small redbud.

Watch the leaves change colour with the seasons. This tree makes an exceptional Autumn tree. The leaves emerge reddish purple in spring, mature to medium green with a slight bluish in summer and turn quality shades of gold, orange and red in autumn.

A perfect backyard tree, specimen tree or planted in a row in order to line a driveway.

Prefers a rich moist soil in an open sunny position, drought and frost tolerant.

Seed Starting Method Cold treatment is recommended prior to planting your seeds in a warm environment. This helps to mimic a natural environment where a seed sits dormant on the ground in Winter and comes to life in spring.

Although most tree seed can be sown throughout the seasons across Australia it is advisable to sow in Spring or Summer in colder regions. The optimum temperate to ensure the best possible germination rate for sowing many tree species is around 18-22oC.

Sow seed on the surface and cover lightly to the depth of your seed. Do not bury deeply.

Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.

Ensure the mix is moist but not water logged.

Place the bagged container in the refrigerator for 7-10 days.

Germination generally occurs in 14-28 days when moved to warmer temperatures after the period of cold treatment.

Do not be too hasty to discard seeds that have not yet germinated, seeds will often lay dormant (in hibernation almost) until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination and sprouting to occur. Containers placed to one side & forgotten about will often surprise long after they were discarded.
