**When publishers Bloomsbury decided to publish *Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone* in 1997 it had already been rejected by 12 other publishers but Bloomsbury took a gamble, paid GBP2,500 for UK & Commonwealth Rights and invested in an initial print run of just 500 hard backs.** From such modest beginnings the Harry Potter brand rapidly expanded to become a worldwide phenomenon: seven books, eight films, a play and themed "Wizarding Worlds" in the UK, USA, Japan and China.
