Protecting Your Dog with Neovet For Puppies & Toy Dogs Fleas: Fleas are the leading cause of skin disease in dogs. While only the size of a pinhead, these tiny parasites infect the skin and coat, causing problems that range in severity from itchiness, weeping sores and scaly skin to, in some cases, life-threatening allergic reactions. Roundworms: In Australia, there are two species of roundworms that can infest dogs; these are Toxascaris leonina and Toxocara canis, which can spread to humans. The prevention of these intestinal worms is important to protect the health of your dog and your family. Hookworms: Hookworms are similar to roundworms in that they live in the dog's digestive system. After attaching to the lining of the intestinal wall, they feed on blood, which can cause internal blood loss. Internal blood loss is particularly dangerous in puppies and toy dogs, due to their smaller size. Whipworms: These hardy intestinal parasites, which can survive in the environment for up to five years, are responsible for the most disease. Whipworms live in the cecum and large intestines of dogs, where they cause irritation of the organ lining. Sarcoptic Mange: Sarcoptic Mange, caused by the parasitic mite Sarcoptes scabiei, is highly infectious to other dogs and humans. These mites burrow beneath the surface of the skin and cause intense itching. Ear Mites: Despite their microscopic size, ear mites can cause severe irritation in the ear canal where they feed on wax and oils. Attempts to relieve itching can result in head shaking, scratching or rubbing of the ears, and secondary ear infections. Lice: Dogs can be infected by three species of lice, which range from bloodsucking to biting. These external parasites irritate the skin, resulting in itchiness and, in severe cases of infestation, anaemia. Heartworms: Heartworm infection is a potentially fatal disease of the heart, lungs and other organs. Heartworm is caused by the parasitic worm Dirofilaria immitis and is transmitted to dogs through mosquito bites. Sadly, wherever there are mosquitos, there is risk of heartworm. On the basis of current evidence, the Australian Heartworm Advisory Panel has recommended heartworm prevention for all domestic dogs year-round throughout Australia. As per the current Australian Guidelines for Heartworm Prevention in Dogs, Australian Veterinary Wholesalers advises that dogs should see a veterinarian regarding heartworm testing in either of the following circumstances:

  • Commencement of heartworm treatment in dogs over two months of age
  • Dogs that have missed monthly heartworm treatments
