Allium fistulosum

Cool season annuals don't come much more traditional than this non-bulbing Japanese green onion, which has been a staple of Kyoto cuisine since the dawning days of the Edo period in the early 1800s. Featuring a narrow stalk that ranges from white to light green and then dark green, these bunching onions reach up to 60cm tall. Not only do they possess a delicious mild flavour, but their edible stems can also be blanched for an even longer length by mound soil around the base of the plant. Whether you prefer them young or mature, these aromatic greens are perfect additions to salads, soups and stir-fries - adding both zest and visual appeal!

Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Keep soil moist and fertilise as needed. Sow in autumn & winter at 5mm deep, 10cm apart. Germination in 7-10 days at 20-24oC. Maturity in 80 days.
