Penfolds - Grange - 1989 - Magnum

Penfolds Grange Shiraz 1989 was made using a blend of 91 percent shiraz and 9 percent cabernet sauvignon. Grapes for this vintage of Grange were grown in the Barossa Valley (Kalimna Vineyard and others) and McLaren Vale regions. It was a good summer until the finish, when it turned extremely hot – and then wet. Very sweet profile. Raisiny, aniseedy, confected. Drinking it is like sucking on licorice-allsorts – did Dave Powell visit Penfolds during this vintage? (that was a joke). Absolutely hedonistic, bitter on the finish maybe but soft and delicious through the palate – a complete crowd pleaser. I am one of the crowd. It’s not a stylish Grange but it packs a sweet punch of flavour. 93 Points/Drink 2001-2018 - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
