The Bluebell Railway

When the Bluebell Railway opened for business on 7th August 1960 the operation of a standard gauge public passenger service by enthusiasts was totally unprecedented and many considered it a foolhardy venture. The doubters had not reckoned with the determination and commitment of Bluebell members, nor had they appreciated how quickly the line would win the affection of the general public. From humble beginnings - the first trains were formed of only two coaches with an engine at each end - the Bluebell has developed into one of the largest preservation centres in Great Britain with a collection of vintage locomotives and coaches rivalled only by those in the National Collection.
