While on assignment, Los Angeles based reporter Karina Danes (Minnie Driver) meets Mariela (Ana Claudia Talancon), a rare survivor of one of the vicious attacks taking place in the border town of Ciudad Juarez. During her recovery, Mariela sees visions of the Virgin Mary and experiences the phenomenon of stigmata. Mariela and her story soon draw a devout following and her sermons galvanise a public in need of hope.
