With the 2009 V8 Supercars Championship debuting in the desert with back-to-back events in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain, defending champion Jamie Whincup dominated the series early in Triple Eights new VE Commodore, shooting out to a sizeable points lead. However as the season wore on, two retirements and a string of poor finishes for Whincup at Ipswich, Winton, Townsville, Phillip Island and then critically in the first race in Sydney meant that the championship would be decided on the Homebush street circuit on the final day of the season. Dick Johnson Racings James Courtney, whose consistency throughout the year in his FG Falcon saw him leading the points going into the final round despite only winning five races to Whincups nine, needed to only finish the final race to be crowned champion for 2010. On a tense December afternoon in Sydney, Courtney crossed the line unscathed, denying Whincup the opportunity of recording three successive championship victories.
