The early rules of rugby were usually decided by those participating before a game took place. A decision took place as to whether or not it was legal to run with the ball shortly before kick-off. The production of the first set of written rules took place in 1845. These rules were produced by the pupils at Rugby School. However people were playing many variations of Rugby at the time.
