The capillary mat (also called absorbent cloth or spreading mat) can evenly distribute water to the bottom of the plant container placed on it. This is a very easy way to maintain the state of the by properly moistening the medium when the germinate, until the time required for sowing. All you need is a waterproof surface on which the absorbent cloth is placed and a water container slightly lower than the surface on which the capillary pad is located. For example, you can cover the counter with plastic to protect the counter, and then spread a pre-moistened absorbent cloth on the counter and hang edge under the sink. Fill the sink with water and put your on it. As long as there is enough water in the sink that can be absorbed by the fabric (capillary pads must be in contact with water), they will remain moist. Get a distance of more than a few centimeters. I have been using it to pump water out of the rain gutter, through the gaps in the plant gutter, and the gutter is on the top of the mat. It keeps the gutter moist enough that you have not watered more than Rainwater (also known as rainwater ditch planting system).
